Who We Are

KidneyKidsCamp2019Our Mission is to offer hope and support to these children and their families. We provide prevention services, educational programs and group activities that empower Kidney Kids to take charge of their health, embrace their future, and achieve lifelong success.

Our Vision is to see every child living with kidney disease thrive.  Our hope as we engage kidney kids is they learn to take charge of their health; manage their condition and embrace their future.  We strive to build a supportive community where families feel nurtured and encouraged.   Our goal is to provide a safe, caring environment where everyone in the kidney kid family can learn, grow and realize their potential. As an organization, NW Kidney Kids strives to be self-sustaining, known as a compassionate force well recognized and respected as one which operates with integrity. We have a positive influence in the kidney disease community both locally and nationally. To do this, we are always seeking to improve and expand our programs to make them relevant and valuable to the needs of more children/families.

Meet our Board of Directors

David Rozansky, MD, Ph.D, Board President Dr. David Rozansky, a respected pediatric nephrologist passionate about caring for his patients at Doernbecher, has been with the Board since its infancy in 2007. Not only does David give us depth and insight as a physician treating children with kidney disease, he owns one of the most impressive collections of kid-friendly neck-ties ever assembled. He lives with his wife Elana in Lake Oswego, proud of his two sons and an avid, intelligent sports fan.
Cory Roletto, Board Vice President Cory followed his wife's example and joined our Board in 2013. As a successful local media design business owner, he brings both technical knowledge and leadership expertise to keep our social media sharp and our practices sound. Perhaps his best contribution is as a donor dad to a kidney teen, Anthony, the eldest of his three busy boys.
Sharon Fleming, Board Secretary Sharon brings a welcomed enthusiasm and fresh perspective. A persuasive professional realtor by day; and an always tenacious parent advocate for her daughters; Sharon's energy and ideas are already making an impact on our Board culture. Mother to an accomplished young adult with kidney disease, her daughter Alex is a valuable volunteer as well.
Aaron Bayne, MD Dr. Bayne is a Pediatric Urology serving Kaiser and Doernbecher Children's Hospital.
Lance Puffer Lance has navigated a fast-paced career in the pharmaceutical world for the past 17 years. He offered his talents and rich background steeped in knowledge of renal disease early this year. His networking, connections and fundraising savvy are already paying big dividends. We appreciate Lance's vision to bring hope and happiness to the kidney community through service and hard work. When he's not on the road, or running on one, he lives with his wife and five children in SW WA.

maggie mackenzie Maggie MacKenzie, Event & Marketing Coordinator
Maggie graduated from Western Oregon University in 2018 with a bachelors degree in Communications. She found a connection to Northwest Kidney Kids when she found out she was in End Stage Renal Failure in April of 2018. mackenzie Mackenzie Kerper, Camps Coordinator
Mackenzie was diagnosed with ESRD at 16, transplanted at 17. Her first transplant lasted about 12 years and she is back on dialysis, anticipating another chance at "normalcy". Mackenzie went to Oregon State University and Western Oregon University, with a degree in Health Education. She is passionate about patient advocate, disease education, and transitional care which is why she love working with NW Kidney Kids because "it's a little bit of all that wrapped into one, plus a whole lot more". Mackenzie enjoys playing card games, shooting pool, singing karaoke, and playing with her dog.

NicBio Nicholas LaHusen, Grantsmith and YA Program Coordinator
After being diagnosed with ESRD via IGA Nephropathy in 2016 and excelling with his care, his NW Renal team all recommended he volunteer as a Counselor for Camp that year. He did, and since then, he has gotten a NKF Community Award, a deceased donor Kidney Transplant, and nearly completed his Bachelors of Arts for Business Management and Leadership, with a minor in Creative Writing and an Entrepreneurship Certificate.

In rare free time he loves to hit the slopes by downhill skiing.

Suzanne Billings
Suzanne Suzanne Billings, MSW, LCSW.
Suzanne Billings was a pediatric social worker who dedicated much of her professional life to working with families of children with kidney disease. Suzanne was integral in the development of NW Kidney Kids and served as President of the Board from 2013 until her death in 2017. Suzanne radiated joy and pride in her kidney kids' accomplishments; she was a true champion for her families and is beloved and missed by all whose lives she enriched over the years.

In the spirit of Suzanne's life work, a scholarship has been established to promote independence and self-empowerment. The purpose of this scholarship is to assist in the development of skills and knowledge to facilitate life-long self-sufficiency for a "kidney kid". These funds can be used to support the higher education or technical training of a young adult with kidney disease.

The Suzanne Billings Memorial Scholarship will be awarded annually by NW Kidney Kids in keeping with its mission to encourage young people with kidney disease to realize their potential and embrace their future.
